Classic Vanilla Custard
Vanilla custard is a smooth and creamy dessert that can be enjoyed on its own or used as a base for many other desserts.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 4 large egg yolks
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 vanilla bean or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
- In a medium saucepan, heat milk and vanilla bean (if using) over medium heat until just boiling.
- In a bowl, whisk together sugar, egg yolks, and cornstarch until pale and thick.
- Slowly pour hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly.
- Return mixture to saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened.
- Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract (if using). Strain through a sieve into a bowl.
- Cover with plastic wrap directly on the surface of the custard. Chill before serving.
