Classic Vanilla Custard

Vanilla custard is a smooth and creamy dessert that can be enjoyed on its own or used as a base for many other desserts.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 vanilla bean or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. In a medium saucepan, heat milk and vanilla bean (if using) over medium heat until just boiling.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together sugar, egg yolks, and cornstarch until pale and thick.
  3. Slowly pour hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly.
  4. Return mixture to saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract (if using). Strain through a sieve into a bowl.
  6. Cover with plastic wrap directly on the surface of the custard. Chill before serving.
