Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
In a small saucepan, melt 1/2 cup butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar until dissolved, then pour into the prepared cake pan. Arrange the pear slices over the sugar mixture.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and cardamom.
In a large bowl, beat the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture alternately with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
Pour the batter over the pears in the cake pan. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert onto a serving plate.
